Manual Cinema
Chicago, IL

ADA/AVA is a contemporary shadow puppet show created by Drew Dir in collaboration with Julia Miller and Sarah Fornace with live music performed by Kyle Vegter and Ben Kauffman.

Bereaved of her twin sister Ava, septuagenarian Ada solitarily marks time in the patterns of a life built for two. However, a traveling carnival and a trip to a mirror maze plunges her into a journey across the thresholds of life and death.

Set in a landscape of the New England gothic, Ada/Ava uses a story of the fantastic and super natural to explore mourning and melancholy, self and other.

SCARY MOVIE PARTY 8 @ The Whistler– Oct 30th, 8pm

20 Oct

8th Annual Scary Movie Party
plus live music by Gel Set
DJ sets by The Third Wave
with live visuals by Chris Puente
and photos from the grotesque burlesque

the WHISTLER ::::::
2421 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Chicago, IL 60647

What started as a ramshackle group of friends making no budget movies and showing them in an attic 8 years ago has now exploded into a collection of works by an international pool of filmmakers, artists and musicians.  Horror-comedie, Lovecraft-inspired oddities, darkly realized music videos, experimental works, abstract narratives– there is something for everyone with an inclination toward the dark and disturbing.  This year’s offerings promise to grab hold of you and not let go.

Gel Set provides a dose of live hazy minimal synth goodness.

The Third Wave spins nuggets of coldwave, post-punk, goth, and new wave darkness throughout the evening while Chris Puente handles live visuals.

Plus, for one night only, the walls of the Whistler will be adorned with photographs from the grotesque burlesque.

Come out. Get dark. Be awesome.

SCARY MOVIE PARTY 8 is nigh!

9 Aug

Hello friends of handmade horror:

It is approaching that time!  SMP8 will be here before we know it.  It is time to get in gear and start working on those films and performances for this year.  Yes friends, you read correctly, not only are we accepting films as usual, we are expanding the palette to include various forms of performance that embrace the grotesque, investigate fear or somehow otherwise explore motifs associated with the concept of horror, however one decides it to be interpreted.

the dates aren’t 100% set yet but we’re looking at the last weekend in October.  So if we could get your films or performance proposals by Oct 20, 2011 that would be fantastic!

more information in the coming weeks, for now send inquiries/proposals/links to:

scarymovieparty ((at)) gmail ((dot)) com

and join the gang on facebook for more updates and whatnot!

SMP7 films– live on vimeo!

11 Nov

Halloween weekend/SMP7 was fantastic.  The Whistler was at capacity and there was a steady flow of folks through the Hyde Park Art Center.  All in all, an estimated audience of 200 (new fans!) experienced the horror of these films.  We couldn’t be more pleased with how everything went.

We’ve got some ideas for a few changes to SMP’s submission process, once they’re cast in stone we’ll let you all know!

It has been a great 7th year of Scary Movie Party.  Really looking forward to SMP8. Thanks to everyone for being a part of it.

Now, the movies!   Enjoy!
